year 1

In Year 1 we aim to learn in an engaging and fun atmosphere.  Our aim is to build upon the excellent foundation that children have had in Reception, whilst introducing them to the the more 'formal' approach of the National Curriculum.  The curriculum for Year 1 is wide reaching, incorporating core subjects (Maths and English) with foundation subjects, such as Science, History, Geography, Design & Technology, Art, Music and French. The joy of Year 1 is how well these subjects overlap via overarching themes and ideas (known as a 'creative curriculum').  Through this approach, we also aim to continue teaching key life skills, such as communication, working together, independence and responsibility.

A strong focus in Year 1 learning is the use of speaking and listening. We encourage children to talk through their ideas and new information before writing and using it.  This idea comes across in homework tasks as well as classroom activities.

We work as a team in Year 1 with and our teaching assistant this year Mrs Locke (mornings only).  Mrs Martin and Mrs Locke cover my planning time on Tuesday afternoons.  All staff, together with the childrens' families, are crucial in ensuring that children access all areas of the curriculum to their personal best.

Helping the 3 Little Pigs measure up for their houses

We've had fun in Maths this week - measuring straws, sticks and bricks - both large and small - to help the 3 Little Pigs decided which to use for their house.

Click on the photos below and scroll along to see what we've been up to.

"We went in the mud. It was thick oozy mud." Niall

"We went on a lion hunt and we got muddy." Millie

"I got stuck in the mud and it was my favourite place ..." Holly

"I loved the mud. I got stuck in the mud on the way back. I didn't like it when I fell over in the mud." Molly

"We saw long wavy grass and we saw a swirling whirling snowstorm." Ellen

"We saw a lion. The lion was in the cave. My wellington was full of water." Oscar H

"I liked it when we went in the cave." Saskia

"We saw really sticky mud and we went into the cold water. We went through a forest and long grass." George

"I liked it in the river and splashing in it." Freya

"We went in the water and we went in a cave and we went in the forest." Corey

The filming went well and once it's been edited will be available to view in the foyer.
